2011 Sea Scout Cruise Aboard USCGC Barque Eagle

Cruise with the Us Coast Guard!

Each year the US Coast Guard and Sea Scouts, BSA team up to offer the cruise opportunity of a lifetime - a week long cruise as a crew member aboard the tall ship USCG Barque Eagle.  Sea Scouts selected will serve alongside USCG Cadets as they demonstrate and perfect their sailing cruise aboard this historic vessel.

When Are the Cruises?

This year the Coast Guard is offering three cruise opportunities -

  • Jul 24 -30, 2011 (Boston, MA - New Bedford, MA)
  • Jul 31 - Aug 6, 2011 (New Bedford, MA - New York, NY), and
  • Aug 7 -13, 2011 (New York, NY - New London, CT)

Who should apply?

Any Sea Scout who is interested.  The ideal candidate will be an active Sea Scout who is at least Able rank, a leader in his or her Ship, a SEAL graduate, 16 or 17 years old, in the 10th or 11th grade at the time of application, and with an interest in the Coast Guard or other military or maritime career.  Remember though, in the past many successful applicants have not had all of these attributes.  So, who should apply?  Any Sea Scout who is interested.

2011 Portland Boat Show

For the last 10 plus years, the Sea Scouts have had a booth at the O'Loughlin Trade Shows Portland Boat Show. We have helped with children water safety training, watched over tide pools, and helped give away life jackets. This years event is still under wrap on what we are doing, but check back soon to see what we are doing.

Return of the PILGRIM

Starboard broadside view of PILGRIMIn September 2008, the 42’ yacht named PILGRIM  left her port in Florence, Oregon returned to Portland and moored at the R.A.Rasmusen Sea Scout Base on the Columbia River, near the Portland International Airport.  This completed a circuitous voyage started in Portland in 1965.

PILGRIM was built by Gladding & Hearn in Somerset, Massachusetts  in 1958.  PILGRIM is a custom yacht built on a tug boat design hull.  The hull is of steel construction and the topsides are of wood.  The boat is heavily built.   PILGRIM was originally ordered built by a couple that intended to go on a

Adventure on the River provides a unique opportunity for young people to develop confidence and teamwork skills while experiencing a spirit of adventure.  The skills attendees learn will serve them not only on the water but in all aspects of their lives!

Participants who have never been on the water before will come away confident after having mastered a new environment.  Those with on-the-water experience will enhance their safe boating and leadership skills.

 

In order to ensure the best experience for attendees, Adventure on the River is currently limited to young adults fourteen or fifteen years of age.

Our ideal attendee is:

  • Curious
  • Open to meeting new people
  • Interested in trying new things
  • Enjoys the out-of-doors
  • Eager to have fun
